Biography

Demetrius McDaniel's practice is devoted primarily to public law and policy, and legislative and administrative law. He represents and counsels clients on state and local law and administrative agency rules and procedures. He also counsels clients on strategy and issue development and on drafting, review and final submission of legislation, rules and other documents. Mr. McDaniel also has practices before various local governments in Texas and is knowledgeable in corporations, contracts, securities, franchise and public finance matters. Mr. McDaniel joined Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer, & Feld as a governmental consultant in November 1988 and began practicing law at the firm in 1991. He became a partner in January 1997. Before joining Akin Gump, Mr. McDaniel worked in several capacities that enabled him to become knowledgeable about Texas state government. From 1983 to 1988 he served as a special assistant to the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, where he worked on a variety of agriculture issues, including appropriation of state money for the agency's budget and agricultural projects. He also helped draft and implement legislation to assist new agriculture industries. He served as a liaison between the commissioner and legislators, assisting legislators in obtaining state and federal assistance for agricultural projects in their districts, including both rural and urban counties. Mr. McDaniel worked in the Texas House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983 as a vice clerk of the Committee on Elections. In this capacity, his principal responsibilities included reading and analyzing legislation and drafting bill analyses for use by members of the legislature. He served as clerk for several subcommittees that required familiarity with rules of procedure and House protocol. Mr. McDaniel served as a staff assistant to a House member, monitoring legislation and working with legislative staff and committee personnel to promote the House member's legislative proposals. Mr. McDaniel received his B.B.A. in finance in 1984 and his J.D. in 1990 from the University of Texas. He is a member of the Texas Bar, the Texas Bar Association and the Travis County Bar Association.
